The Temporary Graduate Visa Subclass 485 is designed for international students who have recently completed their studies in Australia and wish to live, work, and gain practical experience. This visa offers a unique opportunity to transition from student life into the professional workforce, helping graduates enhance their career prospects and potentially work toward permanent residency.
This visa offers two distinct streams, and applicants must choose the correct one when applying:
Graduate Work Stream:
For international students who graduate with skills and qualifications closely related to an occupation on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL).
Post-Study Work Stream:
Available to international students who have recently graduated with a higher education degree from an Australian institution, regardless of their field of study (for those who applied for their first student visa after 5 November 2011).
To qualify for the Subclass 485 visa, applicants must meet the following:
Age: Be under 50 years old.
Student Visa: Have held a student visa within the past 6 months before applying.
Visa Type: Hold an eligible visa (substantive visa, or Bridging Visa A or B).
Course Duration: Must have completed CRICOS-registered courses totaling at least 92 weeks (or two academic years), completed over a minimum of 16 calendar months.
Course Completion Timing: The qualification(s) must have been completed within the 6 months before lodging the application.
Enrollment Evidence: Proof of enrollment and successful course completion must be provided.
English Requirement & Health Insurance: Must meet English proficiency criteria and hold Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) or suitable health insurance at the time of application.
Live, Work, and Study in Australia temporarily after graduation.
Work Experience: Build industry experience that aligns with your qualifications.
Pathway to PR: The 485 visa often serves as a stepping stone toward permanent residency under the Skilled Migration Program or Employer-Sponsored Visas.
Graduate Work Stream: Up to 18 months (extended to 24 months for eligible applicants).
Post-Study Work Stream: Between 2 to 4 years, depending on the level of qualification completed (e.g., bachelor’s, master’s, or PhD).
